Intercultural dialogue. Global values.
Karl-Heinz THIER
Sunday, November 17, 2002 12:01 AM

I agree with Germà for the necessity of an intercultural dialogue, but I do not see a contradiction between universalism and pluralism: leave everybody the way in which she / he has been born on this earth. Neither is there a contradiction between innovation and tradition: tradition is innovation that has proved conducive to the survival of mankind. Neither between analysis and immersion: you immerse while you live, you emerge for analysis when you have some problems in living. Neither between individual growth and collective enrichment: a collective is rich only by its individuals. Neither between identity and alterity: you cannot recognize a difference to other persons if you have not got an identity. I do not know what is pancasila. There is no need for responsibilities, coercion, and competition, unless people have agreed voluntarily; a community just cannot rely on coercive actions.

What you mean by "scalar cohesion level" is perhaps: What must we agree upon, and what not? E. g., in Europe, we must not agree on what is beautiful in Asia or in a specific valley in Asia; let them decide there, unless they exploit this planet.

Subsidiary communication, decentralized politics as much as possible, that is what I am pleading for. This is a feasible way to democracy. That is why I requested to place the attached document in the participants' section. Please, do so. (You can see this document, at: allies.alliance21.org/wp/en/doc/participants/01_thier.html)

How can we ensure that WP operates on values that are agreed on? We cannot. If the people of some communities who send their representatives to the WP have not the values in their hearts, their members of WP will have the values only on their lips. WP is only as strong as their people. It is no use implementing democracy from above. Let people regenerate at the bottom, and you will have a safe top.

Regards from Karl-Heinz
