Introduction of Gary ALEXANDER
Gary ALEXANDER
Sunday, November 17, 2002 12:03 AM
Hi everyone,
My name is Gary Alexander. I work for the Open University in the United
Kingdom, and have been a pioneer in the use of collaborative learning online
at a distance. A recent course I helped develop had 13,000 students in one
year. (see my website at http://sustainability.open.ac.uk/gary .)
I was part of the OU's delegation to the Johannesburg Summit. While there I
was the chair of a side event on Education for Sustainable Development.
Creating new, widely usable approaches to education for sustainable
development is one of my major aims for the near future, and I am involved in
several projects to further this.
I have written a book called 'eGaia, Growing a peaceful, sustainable Earth
through communications'. It is available for download on my website or can be
ordered in print online. It proposes practical steps towards an economy driven
directly by social and environmental needs, rather than by commercial
pressures.
I am interested in practical initiatives to further global self-governance, to
build a co-operative economy, as well as education for sustainability.
I know of other global governance initiatives and am hoping to help them to
work together. I am part of the steering committee of the World Future Council
(just forming), although I haven't yet attended any meetings. I'll report back
on that as developments occur.
Nice to get to know you all.
Regards, Gary
