Responsible Leadership for WP and Global Governance
Rob WHEELER
Sunday, December 29, 2002 2:28 AM

ººº Abstract: There is already a growing consciousness and a large number of people that can provide leadership for a world parliament and lead the way towards the strengthening and democratization of global governance. ººº

Algove speaks of humanity's cosmic or spiritual evolution which will allow us to become true world citizens with the ability to reform and implement new means of global governance. Personally I am quite pleased with his forthrightness. While I agree with his analysis, in terms of this idea that it requires personal evolution to make changes in global situations, I might also mention that opinion polls show that the people in general are already far ahead of governments in terms of the policies and actions which we support.

In addition, from participation in quite a number of global fora and conferences, at the UN and elsewhere, I have found that there are already many world citizens and world leaders among civil society that are more than ready to lead the way responsibly if they are empowered to do so. And likewise in the United States, as elsewhere around the world, there are growing numbers of people who are termed to be * cultural creatives *. This means they already embody the new cultural orientations, many of which we see manifest even within this very forum.

Thus, I have no doubt that if a World Parliament is formed there will be plenty of people to participate that will act responsibly and appropriately. The only challenge is in enacting measures and procedures to ensure that the most capable rise to positions of leadership and that * democratic * participation is cultivated and ensured throughout.

I have noticed both in local communities and in political processes that there is a growing consciousness among an increasing number of peoples. In addition, I fully believe that the act of launching a preparatory process for a World Parliament and taking steps for democratic reform of global governance will in and of themselves awaken many more people and serve as educational vehicles and mechanisms for a wide variety of folks that will truly transform the world. What we create through the WP can seep as well throughout the processes of intergovernmental decision-making. When it is clear that the people are prepared to lead, government officials will have to act themselves; either that or they will have to get out of the way and let us have a go at it.

Sincerely,

Rob Wheeler
