ººº Abstract: Should the WP be no better then a mob on the street? Must we take the choices given, if peace is worth fighting for, doesn't that demand we take the time to solve the issue, not just take a side? ººº
The issue of the United States going to war with Iraq as already been mentioned is a topic for a WP. It is exactly the type of issue that sane people should put into order. Because the peace of the world is at stack. We do not want to set a precedence that any nation without cause can just declare war. But we cannot let any nation ignore the demands of the UN or maybe in the future the WP.
I have listened too much that has been said by peace movements on this issue, and of course we have all heard enough of Bush. I personally don't like him very much, he has the elegance in presentation of an elephant in a China shop. But his lack of charisma does not change the facts. Iraq has ignored 18 UN resolution directed at it. If Bush continues with this war ignoring the UN, To make things equal Bush could ignore the UN 17 more times before the United States would be setting a new precedence.
The same people that are demanding the United States listen to the UN are the same people that not to long ago were saying the UN are puppets of the United States. The UN can't be both, which is it? They are saying this is about oil. I heard that about Kuwait, After the Kuwaits liberation, I heard not one word about oil, not one I told you so.
Are any of these views on either side relevant? I would suggest to you they are not. I am like Jean-Marc Flament encouraged by the up swell of the worlds population in a unified voice, I am saddened by their message. Could it be that everyone is so blinded by their emotions that they cannot see that there is no difference in demanding peace to demanding war. I don't care what your dictate is, it is still a dictate.
Shouldn't a world parliament stop and look at what is really happening? This is a personal feeling anyone can challenge it if you wish, But if there were no Iraq issue, I would feel safe in saying 99.8% of the people of the world would be against war for any reason. This raises an interesting question. What made almost half of those people feel it is justified at this point? I would go one step further and say those that will accept it in this case are still against it.
Why am I saddened by the peace message? It should have been for the UN to act. To take charge and peaceably remove Saddam Hussein from power. Under an agreement a shield of the UN he would be protected and returned to power if nothing is wrong, and with Iraq free of him the truth would come out one way or the other. This solution would work for everyone's satisfaction, unless of course Saddam Hussein is lying. The key here is no War. The current approach almost certainly guarantees it, not a smart move for a peace movement. Taking an emotional view makes the WP no better then the mob on the street.
Its not enough for a WP to simply oppose something, they must present a solution.
Sincerely, Frank Houck
