Md. Shafiqual Haque Choudhury is the founder and Managing Director of ASA, a Micro-Finance Institution in Bangladesh, which covers 2.3 million poor households through a sustainable program of providing cost-effective financial services.
ASA is known globally as the most cost-effective and quick growth organization where cost of money lent is only 3.40%. The Asian Development Bank termed the * ASA Model * as the * Henry Motor Model of Microfinance *. ASA's simple cost-effective model has been replicated in the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, Yemen and India directly and in many other countries indirectly.
Md. Shafiqual Haque Choudhury obtained his Masters Degree in Sociology from Dhaka University in 1969. Before founding ASA, he served in one of the Rural Development Academy under Govt. of Bangladesh as a trainer.
At present, he holds the status/position of: - Chairman of the Asia Pacific Development Cooperation based in Kuala Lumpur. - Steering Committee Member of a global best practitioners Microfinance Network based in Washington. - Member of the Board of INAFI (International Network of Alternative Financial Institutions). - Member of the Policy Advisory Group of the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP)/World Bank. - Team Leader of the International Technical Service Providers (ITSP) of UNDP MicroStart Program for the Philippines and Nigeria. - Member of housing loan trust in Bangladesh where Prime Minister is the Chairperson. - Member of the Social Development Fund (SDF) board - a World Bank funded project in Bangladesh. - Member of advisory board of Credit Development Forum (CDF) in Bangladesh. - Technical advisor of Microfinance team for Social Fund for Development (SFD) in Yemen - a World Bank funded project. - Technical advisor of Microfinance team for * Bina Swadaya *, a leading NGO in Indonesia.
He was a faculty member of Microfinance training in Boulder, USA and also a visiting fellow in Coady Institute at the Saint Xavier University.
