The lists for the WP21 2nd phase (May - September 2003)

Wednesday, 23 April 2003
ººº Abstract: In answer to your interest in keeping one primary list during
the summer, we are going to keep it, with machine translation as announced,
at a step down in quality from that of the current * revised * machine
translation. At the same time we are going to open lists for other languages
if there is a given number of people that are interested in them. Finally,
if you want to open a thematic list, please send to us a message (at least
agreed by 2 or 3 participants) ººº
Dear friends of WP21
In this message we are going to tell you about the organization of the lists
and the language features to be used during the summer, while we also will
send soon a new introductory document with a new agenda for this 2nd phase
of the forum, which will continue on between May and September.
The difference between machine translation and * revised * machine
translation
In response to the interest that some of you have shared about keeping one
primary list, and given that we are not going to be paid for this during
these months and that no one has volunteered to do translations so far, we
are going to keep the global list in French, English and Spanish with *
machine translation * as announced, that is of lower quality than the
current * revised * machine translation. During these months the messages
have been translated with a commercial machine translator * and then revised
* by one person in order to take out misunderstandings as much as possible.
To read a text that has only been machine translated, even if translated
with the most advanced software, requires obviously more effort than to read
a message revised by a person. We expect that in any case we will be able to
keep the interest in the list, as well as we will be inviting new
participants.
Keeping the current main list, and opening lists for other languages
At the same time we are going to open lists for other languages if there is
a given number of people interested in each of them. We will do this while
starting a new round of invitations around the world in May inviting people
to join us for this 2nd phase of the list, in which we will encourage people
speaking other main languages of the world to participate both in the main
and in their own language lists.
There are two reasons for this: First is that English, French and Spanish
are not the only main languages of the world and at the same time we think
that a list with more than 3 languages is unviable. Second, we are
interested in encouraging, during the summer, people of the same language,
region or community to met in a list in order to create in the future
regional and local communities for world democracy and a world parliament.
It is a way of testing for the first time the viability, in terms of volume
of participation and quality of contents, such regional lists, that could
become future working groups for regional assemblies, etc.
We need volunteer translators!
Thus, some participants will be contacted particularly in order to help us
in translating the invitational letter for their respective languages. As
long as we lack moderators , such lists will be facilitated by the team
using machine translation for each of the languages. These lists will
follow the same agenda as the main one, and summaries will be exchanged
between them and the main list.
These exchanged summaries will be revised, by the team, only for French,
English and Spanish.
If you are interested in become a volunteer translator you can contact to us
at any moment. Your work will replace well the machine translations when you
will be able to do it. Even if you can do such work just from time to time,
or in a concrete period between May and September, you can also contact
us.
If you want to open thematic list serves.
Finally, if you want to open thematic list serves, please send us a
collective message, at least agreed among 2 or 3 participants, and we will
open them for you on the WP21 website. Then, a message can be sent to the
whole list inviting the others to participate in such new thematic list, and
these first participants should assure as much as possible the facilitation,
in order to avoid creating lists in which no one is participating.
The agenda of the main list will be organized depending on which are the
thematic lists proposed by you in the next days.
Thanks for your help and for your participation up to now. We expect that
you will enjoy the new phase of the forum. We are waiting for you!.
