Jean-Marc,

I cited the figure of *civilian* casualties from the Iraqi Information Minister because the Iraqi Information Minister clearly has every reason to exaggerate the number of civilian casualties so as to make the US look badly. Thus, the true number of civilian casualties is probably a small fraction of the less than 2,000 he cited.

As for the UN embargo, the US insituted a proposal into the UN embargo that permitted Hussein to sell as much oil as he wanted to buy food and medicine. Hussein refused to do so, and indeed, diverted the money from some of the little oil that he did sell towards building palaces for himself. There is no reason for the sanctions to have killed any civilians, except for the refusal of Hussein of purchase basic food and medicine.

Jean-Marc, I hope that someday you have the opportunity to look some of the Iraqis who are dancing in the streets after tasting freedom for the first time in the eye and tell them "this war was not worth it - and I wish that you were still starving under Saddam Hussein." You are participating in this World Parliament forum because your government gives you the freedom to do so. What are you prepared to do for all those people who do not yet have those freedom?

JDG
